According to NDTV, the boat was ferrying about 12 girls, aged between eight and 14. So far nine bodies have been recovered while three others are still missing.
Usman Ado of Kano State Emergency Service Agency said the operator of the boat swam to safety but had been unable to save any of the girls in the turbulent water.
